Felipe Court

Director, Center for Integrative Biology

I studied biology in Chile working as an undergraduate in the lab of Dr. Jaime Alvarez in local protein synthesis in axons. I then moved to Europe and obtained an MSc and later a Ph.D. at Edinburgh University working in the labs of Dr. Richard Ribchester and Dr. Peter Brophy. Holding an EMBO postdoctoral fellowship, I moved to the lab of Dr. Laura Feltri in Milano, Italy.

My research has been focused in studying the relationship between glial cells and neurons in different biological processes, including axonal degeneration, regeneration and intracellular transfer of cargoes. For this, we use models of axonal degeneration and regeneration in vivo and in vitro, including models of optic and sciatic nerve regeneration and spinal cord injury.

Génesis Vega

Postdoctoral fellow

Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at the Universidad Austral de Chile. PhD in Sciences with mention in cellular and molecular biology at the Universidad Austral de Chile carried out at CECs and University of Heidelberg. Studying the role of NAD+ imbalance in the activation of necrosome and dysfunction of mitochondrial metabolism in chemotherapy-induced axonal degeneration in aged peripheral neurons.

Karina Girardi do Carmo

Postdoctoral fellow

Biologist, Ph.D., and MSc in Cell and Molecular Biology from Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz/RJ). Studying age-dependent decline of regenerative capacity in the peripheral nervous system. Mainly focusing on the contribution of metabolic profile of aging Schwann cells in senescence and particularly exploring the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) like process.

Andrés Fuentes

PhD Student

Biotechnologist and PhD in Integrative Genomics from the Mayor University, Chile. Currently working in the characterization and indiction of senescence over Schwann cells in the context of chronic denervation and aging. Aiming to assess the clinical impact of senescent Schwann cells over axonal regeneration in the peripheral nervous system after mechanical damage.

Francisco Muñoz

PhD Student

Biotechnologist from Universidad Mayor. PhD candidate in Neurobiology at the Center for Integrative Biology (CIB) from Universidad Mayor. Working on the regulating role of aging associated methylation upon mitochondrial stress through the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt) and its impact on neurodegeneration and the functionality of the olfactoctory system using Drosophila as a model.

Felipe Véliz Valverde

PhD Student

Msc Neuroscience. Neurobiology PhD student at Universidad Mayor. I´m interested in understand the  effects of exercise in the aging brain. Skeletal muscle can crosstalk with the brain by myokines, triggering neuroprotective effects.  The aim question of my work is whether some myokines can protects against axonal degeneration by a necroptotic-dependent mechanism.

Enso Torres

PhD Student

Chemical Engineer from Technological University of Havana ”José Antonio Echevarría” with experience in chemical synthesis of peptides, mass spectrometry and proteomics tools. I’m currently working on necroptosis and inflammation in aging and its relationship with oxidative stress in mitochondria.

David Necuñir

Research Assitant

Biotechnology Engineer and Master from Universidad Nacional Andrés Bello, Santiago de Chile. I’m currently working on the role of necroptosis in axonal degeneration in mesencephalic neurons primary culture, RNA transference and glial cells-neurons communication mediated by exosomes using Schwann cells and evaluating regeneration of peripheral neurons.
